The Fate of Medication Abortion
Please consider this call to action from Mallory Schwarz, Executive Director of Pro-Choice Missouri:
On Friday night, two federal judges released competing decisions regarding the Federal Drug Administration’s approval of mifepristone, one of two medications used in medication abortion regimen. To be clear, there is no immediate change to mifepristone access. Anti-abortion politicians in Jefferson City stripped Missourians of their access to medication abortion years ago.
In an unprecedented move, a Trump-appointed federal judge from Texas issued a ruling in Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA revoking the FDA-approval status of mifepristone. In a surprising turn of events, a federal judge from Washington state issued a ruling in Washington et al. v. FDA stating that FDA must keep medication abortion drugs available in at least the 17 plus the District of Columbia that are involved in the lawsuit.
Friday’s decisions, whatever the final outcome, will not change the availability of mifepristone in Missouri due to the history of false compromises made by politicians that slowly chipped away at our access to abortion care over decades, resulting in a statewide ban. For years now, Missourians have been forced to flee the state to access medication abortion care while facing great logistical and legal challenges.
While we await further guidance on the impact of two competing federal decisions, we are reminded how once again Missourians’ fate rests in the hands of men in robes acting thousands of miles away. Abortion is safe and should be legal, accessible, and stigma-free. Missourians deserve to make their own decisions about their bodies, lives, families, and futures.
