Ashrei Foundation Partners to Bring Author Dr. Jonathan Metzl to St. Louis

The Ashrei Foundation and the Washington University Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity & Equity are proud to bring Dr. Jonathan Metzl, Frederick B. Rentschler II Professor of Sociology and Psychiatry, the director of the Department of Medicine, Health, and Society, at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, and gun policy scholar, to St. Louis November 13 & 14, 2024.

From jonathanmetzl.com:

Dr. Metzl is an acclaimed physician and sociologist who speaks, teaches, and writes on a range of topics including mental illness and gun violence, race and whiteness in America, health and healthcare, and diversity and structural competency in higher education.

Jonathan Metzl is the author of the groundbreaking book, Dying of Whiteness: How the Politics of Racial Resentment is Killing America’s Heartland. Winner of the 2020 Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Book Award, the book is an in-depth look at why many working-class white Americans support politicians whose policies are literally killing them.

Being a gun violence expert, professor, and psychiatrist is a unique combination that allows Dr. Metzl to speak and write about gun violence in America, and in particular to address stereotypes that link guns with race or mental illness, or that blame mental illness for mass shootings and other gun crimes.

We will host two events during Dr Metzl’s vist:

This Foundations of Justice event will feature a panel discussion- Courageous Conversations: The Impact of Gun Violence in our Community in which Dr. Metzl will join members of our community to explore the impact of gun violence in our region, including perspectives that challenge the pro-gun-reform framing that sometimes dominate conversations on the topic. Read about our panelists here.

To complement this courageous conversation, a screening of The BRIC’s new documentary, 'Every Bullet Leaves a Mark' will be offered prior to the panel.

Following the program invite you to stay for a complimentary reception with soft drinks, and light snacks where Dr. Jonathan Metzl will host a book signing in partnership with Left Bank Books!

We welcome the St. Louis community to a Book Talk at Wash U with Dr. Jonathan Metzl on What We’ve Become: Living and Dying in a Country of Arms.

This compelling presentation from Dr. Jonathan M. Metzl, Frederick B. Rentschler II Professor of Sociology and Psychiatry, the director of the Department of Medicine, Health, and Society, at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, and gun policy scholar, will delve into his thought-provoking new book and the complexities of gun violence and public health.

All of Dr. Metzl’s books are available for purchase from our friends at Left Bank Books.
